Tire: Firehawk Wide Oval AS (H or V-Speed Rated)
Category: High Performance All-Season
UTQG (treadwear): 460 A A
The Firehawk Wide Oval AS is one of a few offerings from Firehawk in the high performance all-season category. In the performance category, it's a bit of a small volume player and has a pretty good reputation. Among it's peers, I'd say it's ranked in the middle of the top 10...probably no higher than the fourth spot. You can check the tire review guide at the top of this page for full categories and rankings. Back to the tire though, it was designed to be used on sports sedans and coupes to provide year round, four season traction, and the tire is rated for use in light snow. Overall tread design is pretty standard and engineering is the usual solid compounds that Firestone likes to use. Not much innovative in terms of construction, just a well done design.
Drivers that run these tires generally come away with pretty positive remarks. Not that these necessarily outshine some of the competition, they are just good, solid performers. You'll get about 50,000 miles out of a set, which is kind of on the lower end of the range with other high performance tires. However these tires usually run cheaper than competitors, so in terms of dollars paid per mile it's probably in line. A couple points of downside are that snow traction is only average, and these will get a little noisy over time. As I mentioned, it's a solid tire, but not exactly the best at anything. I don't think you can wrong though. If you want good traction and high speed cornering, you'll find this tire to be up to the task. Generally, Firestone tires will run a little cheaper than competitors. That's a general statement, but if you can find these tires at a discount, it's worth it to consider them just due to the value proposition.
