Tire: Pilot Sport PS2
Category: Max Performance Summer
UTQG (treadwear): 220 AA A
The Pilot Sport PS2 is another aggressive Max Performance Summer tire from Michelin. They have a number of very good tires in this performance category and I'd rank this one mid pack, but very high for the category. This tire was initially developed to be used as an original equipment (OE) tire for a wide variety of very expensive and very fast cars such as the McLaren SLR, BMW Alpina Z8, and Porsche GT2/GT3. This is a very advanced tire and it utilizes two different rubber compounds. These two compounds (a high silica and a hybrid silica/carbon) are what give this tire such tremendous grip. As a summer tire, it should not be used in ice/snow or at near freezing temperatures.
As I said, this is a very highly ranked tire and overall for the performance category I'd place it in the top five. Generally you'll find this tire to have good fuel economy along with great wet and dry grip. While not billed as a long life tire, I've know many sets to last beyond 80,000 miles with proper inflation and rotating, which for the performance category is outstanding. I think the long life aspect of these tires is a big selling point considering the great traction they provide. It should say a lot when you look at what cars use this tire coming from the factory!
