Tire: SP Sport Maxx A1 A/S
Category: Ultra High Performance All-Season
UTQG (treadwear): 340 A A
The SP Sport Maxx A1 A/S is a low volume tire from Dunlop that quite honestly seems a little bit outdated for the performance category. This tire is often used as original equipment for cars coming off dealer lots, so it isn't exactly the pinnacle of engineering. Car companies don't necessarily want to pay for the best tire on new cars, and that's what we have here. This tire is pretty generic for the performance segment, and you might see it used from time to time as a replacement tire if you have a puncture and just need a new tire to keep you going.
Considering how drivers talk about the SP Sport Maxx A1 A/S, I'm a little surprised that it is given the ultra high performance nomenclature. It seems to only have good traction on dry pavement. So if you live in a part of the world that receives a significant (or even some I guess) amount of rain or snow I'm going to caution against the use of this tire. From our research it really does seem that Dunlop has dropped the ball on this tire, which is probably the reason why they started to phase it out. Expect about 40,000 miles out of a set, but don't expect it to go well unless you live in a pretty dry climate. Dunlop is a solid tire company, but this tire in particular doesn't deserve a seat at the table. There are many other good options that you'll find not only from Dunlop, but other manufacturers in this segment.
