Tire: SP Winter Sport M3
Category: Performance Winter / Snow
UTQG (treadwear): Not rated
Dunlop does a great job at making performance winter tires, and this is another horse in the stable. I'd call the SP Winter Sport M3 a top 5 tire for the performance category, but it definitely slots in behind the leader (in my book), the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D. Right now, the M3 can only be found in a couple low profile sizes, so unless you've got one of those, then the 3D would probably be your top option. The M3 utilizes a silica-based directional tread compound that stays flexible in cold temperatures and allows the tire to bite down on snow and ice. This is a very rigid tire as well, and Dunlop has done a great job in this respect, so the tire will even give you good dry performance in warmer temperatures. As with other winter tires, Dunlop says you should only install these in sets of four.
These tires have some of the better treadwear qualities over others in the category. You'll likely be able to get 70,000 miles of a set, at least, under ideal conditions (for winter tires, that means a bit colder). That can be double the mileage over other winter tires and it's an impressive feat. Drivers have also found that these tires in particular do a great job in deep snow. This is where winter tires should shine, but it's been called out specifically numerous times so I thought it would be worth mentioning if you are on the fence between a couple different tires. So if you are in the market for a low profile winter tire, the options can get a little limited, but I think you should definitely have this one on your radar.
