Tire: Pilot Alpin PA3
Category: Performance Winter / Snow
UTQG (treadwear): Not rated
This is a great winter tire, I've always found the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 to be a consistent performer when the seasons change for the worse. I'd say that this tire definitely in my top three for the performance category. One great feature about this tire is that it is one of the few in the category that is a low rolling resistance variety, meaning that you will have great winter traction along with improved fuel economy. I'm not exactly sure how they managed to have low rolling resistance and winter traction, but suffice to say that this is a very technologically advanced tire. Just like with other winter tires, Michelin recommends that you only install these in sets of four to maintain the best vehicle control.
I've seen these tires on everything from sports cars to family sedans and they really do perform well across all passenger vehicles. You'll except to get about 50,000 miles out of a set in all likelihood, and that's even up in a New England winter. Drivers also note that among winter tires, these are probably one the quietest as well, which is a function of the advanced tread compound Michelin used to make these. So overall, you'll be able to get through pretty much anything a winter season might have in store, improve your fuel economy, and have a quieter ride compared to other winter tires. This tire is a definite recommend from us here.
